In my paintings I try to capture the effect of light on form, as it defines shapes and creates patterns. I am intrigued with the versatility of the watercolor medium and love not only its freshness, clarity, and transparency, but also the richness of its opaque qualities. Occasionally I add a touch of oil pastel to enhance a special detail with extra color and texture. The opacity of gouache gives a dimension of control and rich color as I work with shapes and their relationships.
Although my style is primarily representational, I respect the special vitality of watercolor paints and work with them loosely to let them flow fluidly and show their unique properties of luminosity and vibrant color. I prefer to paint on site - en plein air, exploring the ways in which solid shapes are affected by light and connect with and contrast to the more elusive elements of sky and water.
Conveying my own sense of a subject through suggestion and impression as well as careful rendering, I hope to elicit in others a fresh perspective and a heightened awareness of a particular scene.
